Sonus
faber was born in 1983, the brainchild of Franco Serblin, a man of remarkable
taste who remains the chief designer and the creative force behind the
company. From modest beginnings, Sonus faber has grown to become arguably
the most dominant design idiom in audio today. Look no further than
any of dozens of different compact systems to see that Sonus faber’s
design influence extends far beyond the borders of the high end. The
name Sonus faber is derived from Latin and means "handcrafted sound,"
a perfectly apt description of the products.
Philosophy: Sonus fabers are based upon the three cornerstones
of speaker design: (1) driver development, (2) crossover theory and
(3) cabinet design.
Drivers: Sonus faber’s philosophy is very simple,
it is however almost impossible to copy as a competitor because it demands
so much of the designer and is inherently costly. The “sound”
of a loudspeaker is in many ways the sound of the driver designs employed
within. Sonus faber expends enormous amounts of time and energy developing
drivers. In much the same way that, for example the heart and soul of
a Ferrari is the engine, so to is the heart and soul of a Sonus faber
the exquisite drivers. Development may take several years to perfect
a driver design for a given application, but the end result is well
worth it.
Crossover Design: The resulting superior driver allows
the crossover design to be kept as simple as possible. Because most
designers are either unwilling or unable to develop the drivers sufficiently,
they are forced to use complicated crossovers that in effect are attempting
to “fix” the original problem that began at the driver.
Following Sonus faber’s approach of first fully developing a driver,
the electrical dividing network of the crossover is kept brilliantly
simple. Most models feature an attenuated 1st order design, the simplest
and arguably most musical of all crossover types. Remember, the simpler
the crossover, the more that amplifiers are allowed to do their job.
Simply put, a Sonus might make your amp sound better!
Cabinet Design: No other manufacturer goes to such
lengths to fuse Old World virtues with high technology. Thus, it is
that an affordable speaker from Sonus faber still comprises no fewer
than eight separate pieces of solid walnut, acting as sidewalls that
allow for resonant tuning of the cabinet. What's that? Resonant tuning?!
Aren't we supposed to eliminate all resonance? Perhaps in a perfect
world, and with unlimited funds, this is a desirable goal. In the real
world, the physical world, resonance of some sort must exist in things
and the Sonus faber design approach acknowledges their existence and
controls them in a way that benefits the music.
Benefits: Sonus faber produces hand-built speakers
that combine the merits of Old World handcrafting with high technology
to produce some of the most musical designs ever. Startling dynamics
and bass performance are just two of the results of this approach. The
discerning owner will have something of beauty that will bring lasting
enjoyment for years to come.
