AVI ADM 9RSS Loudspeakers
TheDigitalMusicExperts.com is very happy to announce the arrival of
AVIs new ADM 9RSS!
AVI has improved the ADM 9s three times now. The prior update (to ADM
9T status) resulted in a subtle improvement in sound quality with significant
improvements to system operation and flexibility. While the update to
ADM 9T status was an evolutionary advance, the latest upgrade to the
ADM 9RSS specification is a revolutionary one. The ADM 9RSS is by far
the best sounding ADM9 to date!
Martin Grindrod and Ashley James at AVI have spent the last two years
evaluating a wide range of prototype mid-bass and treble drive units,
all of which sound quite different from one another. These tests demonstrated
to AVI that the DACs, preamps and power amps included in the ADM 9T
offered exceptional performance and could not be bettered without substantial
increases in price. As these components were properly designed and executed,
the differences between them and even the more expensive versions were
infinitesimal compared to those heard between the prototype drive units.
Because of this, the electronics in the ADM 9RSS are for the most part
unchanged. The only significant change was to lower the crossover frequency
in order to suit the new and drastically improved drive units. The ADM
9RSS uses a new 6.5 mid-bass driver with better deep bass response
and lower distortion than its predecessor. For the treble range, AVI
is using their favorite ScanSpeak Revelator 1.1 soft dome, ferro-fluid
cooled tweeter. This is the same tweeter AVI used in their $10,000.00
per pair Brio speakers, and that other manufacturers use in speakers
costing over $50,000.00 per pair! The ScanSpeak Revelator allows AVI
to lower the crossover frequency between the mid-bass and tweeter, resulting
in decreased intermodulation and total harmonic distortion, improved
dispersion and in room power response as well as offering more extended
Overall, the resulting ADM 9RSS is a revelation. All of the strong suits
of the earlier ADM9s have been enhanced. There is even greater clarity,
even greater precision to the stereo image, even greater soundstage
width and depth as well deeper bass extension and wider dynamic range
. These improvements are all easily heard, and are most apparent with
hard to reproduce instruments such as piano and voice.
Just as their predecessors were, the new ADM 9RSS are unique in not
only being active but also in having a built in remote controlled preamp
with a state of the art Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). Most of all,
the ADM 9RSS are distinctive because they sound better than products
costing many times their price.
Since the new and better drivers cost more and the cost of everything
else has risen in the four years since their last price increase, the
new ADM9RSS are now priced at $2795.00 per pair. This is still a fraction
of the cost of the legacy systems they replace!
ADM 9RSS are comprised of:
- A state of the art 24bit 192kHz digital
to analogue converter (DAC)
- A high performance remote controlled
three input line level preamplifier featuring two optical digital
and one analogue RCA inputs with fixed gain capability for easier
integration in home theater and mulit-channel applications
- A low distortion 4th order Linkwitz-Riley
electronic crossover at 2.3kHz
otwo linear, bipolar power amplifiers (per speaker) with 75 WPC for
the tweeter and 250WPC for the woofer
- Precision engineered 1.1" ScanSpeak
Revelator tweeter and an upgraded 6.5" long throw midbass driver
- A rigid, highly damped enclosure finished
in high quality real wood veneers or high gloss piano finish
Black Gloss: $2,795.0
ADM 9RSS Technical Specifications:
- Power amplifiers - High speed, linear,
analogue bipolar, 75 WPC for the tweeters and 250 WPC for the bass
drivers. Distortion is typically better than 0.002% with a dynamic
range of 120 dB.
- Crossovers- High quality 4th order
Linkwitz Riley discrete analogue.
- Preamplifier - High performance, state
of the art analogue preamplifier with two digital and one analogue
input. Operation is via infra red remote and volume settings are remembered
for each individual input. Analogue input feature fixed gain capability
for easier integration with home theater and multi-channel audio applications.
- DAC- State of the Art 24/192, completely
jitter free design.
- Bass driver - Upgraded high power
handling 6.5" paper cone drive unit with 1.5" voice coil
and exceptionally broad bandwidth, thus enabling a phase perfect crossover
at 2.3 kHz. Bass extension rated to better than 55Hz (-6dB).
- Tweeter - 1.1" ScanSpeak Revelator
Silk Dome tweeter with Ferro Fluid cooling and 28 kHz extension (-3dB).
System Amplitude response better than + or - 2 dB, 100 Hz - 20 kHz.
Max continuous SPL (both speakers driven at 1m, 100 hr rating) 108dB
with +8dB headroom.
- Dimensions - 12.25 X 8
X 12.25 inc. connectors
- Net Weight - 20 Lbs per speaker
- Shipping Weight - 55 Lbs per pair
This makes the ADM 9TRSS unique, as they
are a COMPLETE Hi Fi System in a pair of compact monitor speakers, capable
of stand, shelf or wall mounting. All they need is a multimedia audio
source (either analogue or digital) and you have a high performance,
compact, efficient and versatile Hi Fi system.
Conventional active loudspeakers are the standard in professional recording
studios, but are NOT a COMPLETE SYSTEM because they do not have a built
in digital to analogue converter (DAC) or preamplifier. To use these
professional market products at home, you would need to purchase a DAC
and preamplifier separately, increasing both cost and clutter.
It is widely accepted that active loudspeakers sound better than passive
ones. This is because the crossovers can be designed to perform in a
truly transparent manner and their power amplifiers can be optimized
for the particular drive units. Contrary to traditional Hi Fi opinion,
you achieve a far better result by integrating as much of the system
as possible as the manufacturer can precisely match each component in
the playback chain. There are also large cost savings to be made, resulting
in a significant reduction in end user prices.
It is no exaggeration to state that ADM 9RSS will outperform, by an
appreciable margin, traditional separate component systems costing many
times their price. For example, despite their costing much more AVIs
Lab Series CD player and Integrated Amplifier driving Duos/ Pro-Nine-Plus/Neutron
4's (or any passive two way speaker for that matter) simply will not
sound as good, because the quality of the front end (any front end!)
sources will be sabotaged by the passive crossover in the loudspeakers.
You may have noticed that AVI does not include an iPod dock with their
ADM 9RSS. AVI sees little benefit in doing so as an iPod is optimized
to be operated as a portable device. When used with a dock, an iPod
becomes a bit fiddly to control and the display is often
hard to see from across the room. A much better route to go is to use
iTunes running on a domestically acceptable computer and stream the
content to you ADMs. This can be done in a number of ways (give us a
call or drop us an email and we can explain the options to you and make
so specific recommendations) while using your iPod Touch, iPhone or
iPad to control the system. This method gives you much more control
as well as greater access to the wide variety of media available in
our modern digital age.
Finally, in these days of limited resources it is irresponsible for
manufacturers to produce products that use multiple expensive metal
enclosures that are also relatively energy inefficient. Some manufacturers
even require separate, large add on power supplies to work their best.
AVI believe that there is absolutely no need for this to be the case
in a properly designed system! A pair of ADM 9RSS use far fewer resources
in both their production and their day to day use than traditional component
audio systems. In fact, when playing a pair of ADM 9RSS they consume
about as much energy as a Mac Mini - and that is some pretty green company
The AVI ADM 9TRSS is currently available in Gloss
Black finish only. A Gloss White finish will be added mid to late summer
